The Makalu Base Camp Trek

To the foot of the world's fifth-highest peak, through Makalu-Barun National Park — the greatest elevation range of any protected area on Earth.

20 Days / 19 Nights Physical Grading 5 out of 5 Makalu Base Camp (Shershong), approx. 4,870 m Makalu Barun Region, Nepal
Starting from $2,650 per person

Overview

Makalu-Barun National Park holds the greatest elevation range of any protected area on Earth — from subtropical forest at under 500 m to Makalu's 8,485 m summit, inside a single park boundary. This trek climbs the whole of that range on foot, through some of the least-crowded high country left in Nepal, to stand beneath the world's fifth-highest mountain.

The approach begins with a scenic flight to Tumlingtar, followed by three days climbing through Rai and Sherpa farming country to Tashigaon, the last permanent village before the high route. From there, the trail crosses the Shipton La into the Barun valley — a glacial corridor of waterfalls, rhododendron forest, and increasingly stark alpine terrain — before reaching Makalu Base Camp itself, with Makalu, Chamlang, and Baruntse rising directly above.

Two full days are held at Base Camp rather than one, and the return follows the same route back to Tumlingtar and a flight home. This is a wilderness trek first and a summit-adjacent trek second: the biodiversity of the Barun valley, and the genuine solitude of the route, are as much the point as the mountain itself.

Highlights

  • Makalu-Barun National Park, holding the greatest elevation range of any protected area in the world — subtropical forest to 8,485 m inside one boundary
  • Tashigaon, the last Sherpa village before the high route, and a genuine cross-section of eastern Nepal's hill farming communities along the way in
  • The Barun valley, one of the most pristine and least-visited wilderness corridors in the Himalaya
  • A ranger-led session on the park's exceptional biodiversity — home to red pandas, snow leopards, and over 3,000 species of flowering plants across its elevation range
  • Makalu Base Camp itself, with direct views of Makalu, Chamlang, and Baruntse
  • Two full days held at Base Camp, not one, with a viewpoint hike for those who want it
  • A route that sees a fraction of the traffic of Everest or Annapurna — genuine solitude on one of Nepal's great treks

  • Headlamp with spare batteries

Good to Know

  • This is a wilderness trek first and a summit-adjacent trek second — the biodiversity of the Barun valley and the genuine solitude of the route are as much the point as Makalu itself.
  • Camping support is used for the high-altitude section of the route, where teahouse infrastructure is minimal to nonexistent.
  • Two full days at Base Camp (approx. 4,870 m) are held deliberately for acclimatization, not just sightseeing — know the AMS symptoms and descend rather than push if they worsen.
  • A ranger-led conservation session covers the park's exceptional biodiversity, including red pandas, snow leopards, and over 3,000 species of flowering plants across its elevation range.
  • Insurance must cover trekking above 5,000 m and helicopter evacuation from a remote national park with limited road access.
  • October–November and March–May offer the most reliable flying weather for the Tumlingtar sector; build a spare day or two into your schedule on both ends in case of flight delays.
